Meaning “Beautiful Night”, our Bella Notte print is a dramatic, evocative tribute to romance. The seated woman in the trees with her dreamy, faraway gaze was painted in 1880 by artist & poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti.

Product description

The open book at the bottom of the design reads “Many are the stars I see, yet in my eye no star like thee” — words which we took from an engraving inside the band of a gold ring made in the 1700’s. The beautiful moonlit river landscape on the bodice of the dress comes from an 1840’s British oil painting, and the exquisite floral trim is from the border of a calligraphic manuscript by famed artist William Morris from the same era. Interestingly, the model for the woman in Rossetti’s painting is Jane Morris, wife to William Morris. She was a talented artist in her own right, and an enigmatic muse to both her husband and Rossetti throughout the Arts & Crafts movement. Like all of our slip dresses, this piece is reversible.

Please note: The nature of our soft bamboo/wood viscose means it’s slightly sheer, so we recommend layering it with our Étoile slip (or any other slip you have) when wearing it with bare legs. Our model in the photos is wearing the dress without a slip.

100% bamboo/wood viscose. Machine wash gentle or handwash and hang to dry. Iron to finish if needed.

Adjustable straps. Dress measurements: S/M — length 132cm at shortest strap adjustment, 142cm at longest. Width 52cm (across bust, underarm to underarm), 54cm (across waist seam). L/XL — 134 cm length at shortest strap adjustment, 144cm at longest. Width 57cm (across bust, underarm to underarm), 59 cm (across waist seam). Model is 5’7”, and is wearing a size S/M for reference.
